ANALYSIS OF THE OPENING SEQUENCE OF TEARS

This opening sequence begins with title credits with non diegetic music using instruments such as strings. The non diegetic also has a drum beat behind it, creating the tension in the music. The clip begins with a voyeuristic scene of a small girl playing on a swing with the ambient sounds of birds in the background. This misleads the audience as to what is about to happen, making it more of a shock, a key element in what horrors aim to do. The camera then cuts to show a close up of the girls legs and then cuts again to show the rope of the swing which she is on. We are then shown another voyeuristic clip, of the girl. This also creates the idea that someone or something is watching her, which builds the tension in the scene. A side close up is then shown for a few seconds before the legs of what appears to be a women swing into the camera shot in synchrony with the girl on the swing. As the body is introduce the use of incidental sound is used which helps make the shock much more extreme for the audience. We are then shown again another long shot which helps us to establish that the women has been hung. The women that has been hung is stereotypically pale with long black hair, an idea used in a lot of horror films. The shot also cleverly shows the resemblance between the small girl and the women which has been hung, as they are both pale with long black hair but are also wearing the same coloured top. Could this be on purpose? We are then shown a close up of the small girl who realises the body, but no emotion is shown from her facial expressions. An over the shoulder shot is shown to show the audience the body hanging from the tree which is shortly followed by a cut to the rope being untied from the tree itself. Another blocked shot is used to show the body falling to the floor with the diegetic sound of the body hitting the ground. Another close up is shown of the girl, which this time shows the shock and fear from her facial emotions and the camera quickly cuts to the tree the body was hanging from as the body slowly rises from the ground, this again shocks the audience. The camera cuts to the back of the 'dead' body to show the rope remaining around her neck and by using visual effects and incidental sound, fear and tension is again created. We are then shown another close up of the small girl, showing even more fear from her facial expressions which is also reinforced by the non diegetic sound of the girls heartbeat as the 'dead' girls hand reaches in the camera shot to grab the small child. The camera immediately cuts to an extreme long shot of the 'dead' girl alone in the environment we have just seen, leaving the audience wondering what has happened to the small girl. A key convention of the horror genre, encouraging the audience to continue watching to find out.
